Despite this they went on sinning;
they had no faith in his wonders:
so he ended their days like a breath
and their years in sudden ruin.

When he slew them then they would seek him,
return and seek him in earnest.
They would remember that God was their rock,
God the Most High their redeemer.

But the words they spoke were mere flattery;
they lied to him with their lips.
For their hearts were not truly with him;
they were not faithful to his covenant.

Yet he who is full of compassion
forgave them their sin and spared them.
So often he held back his anger
when he might have stirred up his rage.

He remembered they were only men,
a breath that passes never to return.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
— as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

From a treatise against the heresy of Noetus by Saint Hippolytus, priest
The manifestation of the hidden mystery

There is only one God, brethren, and we learn about him only from sacred Scripture. It is therefore our duty to become acquainted with what Scripture proclaims and to investigate its teachings thoroughly. We should believe them in the sense that the Father wills, thinking of the Son in the way the Father wills, and accepting the teaching he wills to give us with regard to the Holy Spirit. Sacred Scripture is God’s gift to us and it should be understood in the way that he intends: we should not do violence to it by interpreting it according to our own preconceived ideas.

God was all alone and nothing existed but himself when he determined to create the world. He thought of it, willed it, spoke the word and so made it. It came into being instantaneously, exactly as he had willed. It is enough then for us to be aware of a single fact: nothing is coeternal with God. Apart from God there was simply nothing else. Yet although he was alone, he was manifold because he lacked neither reason, wisdom, power, nor counsel. All things were in him and he himself was all. At a moment of his own choosing and in a manner determined by himself, God manifested his Word, and through him he made the whole universe.

When the Word was hidden within God himself he was invisible to the created world, but God made him visible. First God gave utterance to his voice, engendering light from light, and then he sent his own mind into the world as its Lord. Visible before to God alone and not to the world, God made him visible so that the world could be saved by seeing him. This mind that entered our world was made known as the Son of God. All things came into being through him; but he alone is begotten by the Father.

The Son gave us the law and the prophets, and he filled the prophets with the Holy Spirit to compel them to speak out. Inspired by the Father’s power, they were to proclaim the Father’s purpose and his will.

So the Word was made manifest, as Saint John declares when, summing up all the sayings of the prophets, he announces that this is the Word through whom the whole universe was made. He says: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Through him all things came into being; not one thing was created without him. And further on he adds: The world was made through him, and yet the world did not know him. He entered his own creation, and his own did not receive him.

Today's Meditation

“An excellent method of preserving interior silence is to keep exterior silence. . . even in the world, each one of us can make his own solitude, a boundary beyond which nothing can force its way unperceived. It is not noise in itself that is the difficulty, but noise that is pointless; it is not every conversation, but useless conversations; not all kinds of occupation, but aimless occupations. In point of fact, everything that does not serve some good purpose is harmful. It is foolish, nay, more, it is a betrayal to devote to a useless objective powers that can be given to what is essential. There are two ways of separating ourselves from almighty God, quite different from one another but both disastrous, although for different reasons: mortal sin and voluntary distractions—mortal sin, which objectively breaks off our union with God, and voluntary distractions, which subjectively interrupt or hinder our union from being as close as it ought to be. We should speak only when it is preferable not to keep silence. The Gospel does not say merely that we shall have to give an account of every evil word, but of every idle thought.”

Daily Lectio Prayers

Daily Lectio Prayer

God
Isaiah 30:15 (ESV): In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.

I give myself to you GOD, to be with you and rest in you.

I consent to your presence and action within me.

Father
Matthew 6:6 (ESV): But when you pray, go into your room, and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

I go into the room of my soul, close the door, and pray with you in secret. Please renew my union with you and transform my heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Son
Matthew 11:28 (ESV): Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

I come to you Jesus tired and heavy laden for rest in, with, and through you.

Cover me with your blood so I can be in your presence.

Holy Spirit
Romans 8:26 (ESV): The Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Holy Spirit, I ask you to please help me rest and pray.

Only you know what I need and how to pray for it.

THE WORD gives Spirit, Life, & Transformation

James 1:21 (ESV): receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Humbly receive the word and implant it in your heart, soul, and mind and then obey it.

John 6:63 (ESV): It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life

The Spirit is what gives me life and that is found in the WORD of God!

Romans 12:2 (ESV): Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

To be transformed you have to renew your mind. To renew your mind you have to use your thoughts. And you gave to use your thoughts on the WORD which gives spirit and life.

What is the Lord saying to you in these scriptures?

What can you say to the Lord in a response to His Word?

What conversion of Mind, Heart, and Life is the Lord asking of you today?

Spend a few moments in silence resting in the presence of the Lord.

Nourished, by Gods Word, what is one specific way you can go forth and make your life a gift for others?

Rejoice always

Pray without ceasing

Give thanks in all circumstances

This is the Will of God in Christ Jesus for you
