Just like the multiplication of the loaves

From Plain Bread to Holy Host

This whole dynamism is beautifully present every time we go to Mass. We offer to God the humble gifts of bread and wine — the most normal, earthly products of nature and human labor. We place them on the altar, in all their plainness, simplicity, and fragility. And what happens? They become hosts of Christ’s own precious Body and Blood. God “gracifies” them, transforming them into something that no human effort, however magnificent, could ever accomplish: the Eucharistic presence of the Lord himself.

My Lectio Divina: on Revelation 3

To the church in Sardis

The words of Jesus

I know your works

You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead

Wake up

Strengthen what remains and is about to die

Remember what you received and heard

Keep it and repent

If you do not wake up, I will come against you at an hour. You don’t know.

There are a few names with you who have not soiled their garments and will walk with me in white for they are worthy

The one who conquers will be clothed in white, I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my father.

He who has an ear let him hear

{Works can be done for God but not in with or through him. It looks like you are alive in God because of the works you do but they are empty of meaning. You do them so you think you are in God. But you are dead because you are not on the vine. To be doing to works of God you must believe. To believe is to be entrusting your entire existence to Him and do the work he gives you to do for LOVE.

Wake up! This verse is a wake up call. Remember the new life you received in the Holy Spirit. Strengthen what remains from your beliefs. Remember what you heard about this new life in Christ. It is a complete and utter abandonment into him. You are no longer living-He lives in you. REPENT. Come cack to Him. If you do not wake up and abandon your life to Him he will come for you at a time you are not expecting. You may be lost!

If you come back you will be clothed in white. You will not be blotted out of the book of life if you hold on to him and abide in the vine. Jesus will confess you are His to his Father. HEAR HIM!

Oh my Jesus, I do not want to do works just to think I am in you. I want to be led by you and do everything because I love you and you have told me to do it. I believe you know best for my soul and to help others. The works were given by God for me to walk in them. Those are the only works that are meaningful.

Thank you for telling me how to evaluate whether I am alive or dead. Open my eyes to see where I am and get me back on the path you have chosen for me.

Thank you for being willing to correct me and not let me die going my own way. I can deceive myself by doing things for you but not because you told me to, nor with true love, but to think I am with you when doing my own thing. SAVE ME. HELP ME. OPEN MY EYES.

I love you my God!}

The Prodigal Son Parable

One

The greatest short story ever written

Great literary fiction may be ranked according to the insights it gives us into the real world and actual human existence. In which case, the Parable of the Prodigal Son is undoubtedly the greatest piece of fiction ever authored. This story tells us, in sudden, broad and beautiful strokes, about the history of whole civilizations and peoples. It’s a story about the lost and found younger brother and the unforgiving, ungrateful older brother.

The younger brother represents the Gentiles. The older brother represents the Jews. It’s a story about the lost, dissipated secular world, and the proud, ruthless Muslim world, both of whom have rejected their relationship with their loving Father. It’s even a story about fallen humanity, which has returned to the Father in the Person of the Incarnate Son, contrasted with the fallen angels, those elder brothers who still refuse, due to their eternal pride and envy, to come back into the Father’s house.

But most of all, this story is about the individual human heart and the untiring efforts of a loving Father to bring each of us home.

Two

The Younger Son – Irreligious Worldliness

Every one of us carries the temptation to worldliness, to ignore, abandon, forget God, and lose ourselves in the interests of this life. This is what the younger brother does: he thanklessly receives, actually, demands, countless gifts from God, and promptly proceeds to turn his back on the Giver. God has entrusted us with so much: bodies, minds, possessions, relationships, all for the sake of working to build up His Kingdom. And instead, we squander his gifts.

We indulge our bodies, we waste our minds, we heap up possessions pointlessly, and we exploit our relationships.

The prodigal son gets his name from how prodigiously, how quickly, he burned through his inheritance. And how prodigiously we waste our time and our gifts! It’s amazing how quickly we burn through our lives, how little use we make of God’s gifts in the process. We live for the world instead of for the Lord, and then the world turns on us.

The feast turns into a famine. Our self-indulgence turns to perversion and loneliness. Our plans and projects come to nothing. We’re humiliated and empty, our souls go hungry as we tend the pigs of our addictions. Then, when everything else has shown itself to be a stupendous failure, a total let-down, we remember God.

Three

Elder Brother – Religious worldliness

Some of us realize the world isn’t a smart long-term investment, so we decide to go the religious route. We join up with God, and follow the rules, we put in our time, but why? So we can cash in at the end.

It’s not because we really love God, because we really are filled with a desire to serve Him or make others happy. At the end of the day, we’re still just thinking about ourselves. And the truth is, we’re often envious of the non-religious people, they seem to have such a good time, and we’re stuck with the same old boring morality and religion.

Look at the older brother, he only thinks of his life in terms of his eventual payout. He envies the fun his little brother must be having and when that brother comes home and is welcomed with a celebration, no way! No way! It’s not fair! He gets all that fun with his drinking and his prostitutes, and then he gets his inheritance back too!

Do you see that the elder brother doesn’t care about God, doesn’t appreciate His closeness to Him? And he cares nothing for his brother’s happiness. All this time, the prodigal son has been lost, confused, alone, destroying himself, living in shame and indignity while the older brother has been able to work side-by-side with the Father who loves him, honors him, values him, and has shared His whole life with him, teaches him how to be a man, and how to be happy. Then the older brother complains about not getting a goat!?

How is it that we dare to envy secular people for their sin? We resent God for being a hard taskmaster when He saves us from ruining our lives, and then we begrudge it when He rescues our brothers from the human wreckage of their sins. If our religion isn’t based on gratitude for the happiness of loving God, for His filling our life with good things, for His teaching us how to avoid destruction, and for His offering us “all He has”. If our religion isn’t based on a deep pity for the suffering of those who are far from God, and a delight when they finally come back to the fold.

Then it’s a religion that will keep us out of the kingdom when the repentant have entered it.

Four

Avoiding the Errors of the Two Brothers

In the story of the Prodigal Son, neither brother realizes, firstly, that intimacy with God is happiness. Secondly, that a sinful, worldly life, a life separated from God, is pure and simple misery. So, how do we avoid their mistakes? We seek communion with God. By asking Him for that gift, by cultivating our relationship with Him in daily prayer. We refuse to hanker after (or envy) a sinful life. By remembering that all sin, all worldliness, carries within it the seeds of its own misery. By praying for those who are far from the Lord, and doing all we can to bring them back to the Father’s love.

Five

Father’s Indefatigable Effort to Bring both His Sons home

The story of the Prodigal Son is about the tension we all experience, whether in the Church or out of the Church, between the longing to find happiness in worldly things and the knowledge that happiness lies only in loving communion with God and others. But as many people have pointed out, the most important character in the story is the Father.

The Father who leaves His house, who runs out the door, to bring His boys back home. This is a Father whose love is unconditional, it doesn’t matter what His sons have done, what they’re guilty of. One son is a moron who abandons Him, systematically wrecks his own life, and only comes back to the Father when he has no other options left. The other son treats all His Father’s love and care as a burden, and in exchange for all the blessings he’s received, he demands that his less fortunate brother be kept unhappy forever.

Doesn’t matter. The Father just wants them both to join in the feast, in the everlasting celebration. That’s God’s love for us. It doesn’t matter what horrible children we’ve been, how disgracefully we’ve treated Him, He’ll always try to get us to come back to Him and be happy. It’s really wonderful, when you think about it, that you and I have a Father like Him.

Suggested Resolutions:

Choose one resolution for today to help you grow closer to God, or create your own. Here are some ideas to inspire you.

  • Waste no time in returning to the Father. Remember that the Father only wants His sons to join the feast, so make the habit of going to confession as often as possible and returning to the Feast of Holy Communion.

  • Who are you harboring envy for? Spend time in gratitude each day, remembering what the Father has given you and the great gift you have in your faith.

My Lectio Divina: on Psalm 39

Make me know my end

what is the measure of my days.

Let me know how fleeting I am.

My lifetime is nothing before you

All mankind stands as a mere breath

My hope is in you

Deliver me from my transgressions

You are the disciplinarian

Hear my cry hear my prayer do not be silent

Look away from me that I can be happy again and not die

{I know my life is short. My days and years seem long but they go really quickly. But before you (your eternalness) I am nothing but a breath. My entire life is like one breath for you considering your timelessness. (Probably shorter than that!)

My hope is in you. You know all, see all, and orchestrate all! I am nothing and have limited scope. I submit to your grandeur.

I go astray and fight by controlling things when I don’t know. I make a mess of things. I get into transgressions. Please deliver me. Please remind me I don’t have to live in fear and try and control things. You have all things in your hand.

When you discipline, please have mercy. Hear my cries when I am disciplined. Hear my prayers when I am being disciplined. Help me because you know how weak I am. Do not be silent. Help me even in my punishment. I will die without your love!

I don’t really want you to look away from me to be happy again. I want you to bless me with forgiveness and peace. I just don’t want to die under your wrath. Help me quickly see my wrong and make amends as I can. Help me reconcile so I can have life. Especially have life in you, not apart from you.

Thank you God for showing me how delicate and tiny I am to you. That only in you can I have safety. That I need to be one with you and listen so I don’t leave and make a mess and transgress. If I do, please be gentle! You are Mercy! Thank you for your awesome love and guide me to come back to you as soon as possible. I Love You my God! Amen}

Prayer itself is not pleasing to God unless it rises from a humble heart which recognizes, with simplicity and frankness, its own wretchedness and utter weakness before the Most High.

The higher the ideal of sanctity and of union with God to which a soul aspires, the deeper it must descend to dig out in itself an abyss of humility to attract the abyss of infinite mercy.

Joshua 22:5

Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Be careful to follow his commands, only they give true life.

Love God!

Walk in, with, and through Him, by the Holy Spirit, so you can keep the commands that bring life.

Cling to Him!

Serve Him With all that you are and have!

He loves you and wants to save you from enemies of your soul that attack from the inside! He is Worthy!

To the church in Pergamum

The words of him who has the two edged sword

{To me who is part of the church, From Jesus who has a two edged sword to slice away falsehood. Please Jesus help me listen to your words who will cut away wrong thoughts that lead to wrong action. Thank you for being willing to cut it away!!}

~~~
I know you dwell where Satan‘s throne is
You hold fast my name
You did not deny my faith
{I dwell on the earth and Satan is corrupting the entire world here. I must be diligent and keep my eyes in Christ so I don’t get deceived. I can’t even look to myself because I am corrupt on the inside. I must be constantly cleansed. Hold fast to Christ. I must stay in the Word and in his teaching! I must believe and not deny the faith. The faith is in the Catholic Church. All the truth is there. Some men even in the church distort it because they are men. All men are corrupt. I must stick to the teachings and not deny the true faith! Not believe lies from any man even if it were from inside the church. Thank you Jesus for giving us the Bulwark of Truth. Thank you for keeping the church teachings for over 2000 years. Help us not listen to any man teaching wrong even in the church, especially in the church, we do want to listen because we are weak and want our way not yours but it leads to hell. Save us!}
~~~

I have a few things against you

Some there in the church hold to the teaching of BALAAM practice eating food, sacrifice to idols and sexual immorality

You also have some holding to the teachings of Nicolaitans

Repent, or I will come to you and war against them with the sword of my mouth

{Jesus has things against those in the church. Some in the church hold to the false teaching of sacrifice to idols and sexual immorality. It is very rampant here to have idols along with so called worship of God. And of course the sexual immorality is ALL OVER even now to the extent of wanting to change a biological gender. Lord, it is so dark here. We have corrupted our minds so much we don’t even know what gender we are. Help us Repent! Help us tell the truth. Help us tell of your amazing love that wants people to be free from the lies that are killing them! Thank you for your church that holds the truth. Help us! }

If you can hear, hear what the spirit says

If you conquer, I will give the hidden manna and a white stone with a new name that no one knows, except the one who receives it

{We must be listening. We must hear you speaking. We must hear and do what you say. That is the only way to salvation. Help me God hear your Spirit!! Help me obey your Spirit. I will be rewarded for it! If I keep hold of you I will be fed and get a new name. Jesus help me!!}

~~~
To the church in Thyatira
The words of the son of God who has eyes like flame of fire and feet like burnished bronze
I know your works your love, faith, and service and patient endurance
{Jesus is Speaking! He has eyes of fire burning through all the lies around us penetrating deep in our hearts. He sees all my works, live, faith, service, and patient endurance! He sees EVERYTHING! Jesus please keep helping me!! You are the remedy.}
I have this against you, you tolerate Jezebel, who causes herself a prophet and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and eat food sacrifice to idols
I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of sexual immorality
I will make her sick, and those who committed adultery will be thrown into tribulation unless they repent of her works and her children I will strike dead
{Jesus has this against me, I tolerate the false teaching of sexual immorality and sacrificing to idols. What am I supposed to do about it? How do I stand up for the truth? I am trying to follow and keep myself but how do I tolerate? What would intolerant action be?
Those in sexual immorality refuse to repent. Jesus gives them time but they don’t. Those who practice it will become sick. They will have tribulations because of it. The sickness is a punishment in hopes of people turning back to God, not to hurt but to heal!
Jesus how should I be intolerant of this corruption? Tell people they are under wrath and to turn around? I need help to what this means. Tough Love? Guide me Holy Spirit.}
The churches will know that I am here who searches mind and heart. I will give to each of you according to your works.
{Jesus searches minds and hearts. He rewards based on DEEDS not “faith” you can deceive yourself. You do what you believe. So Works are the  standard of judgement. Thank you Jesus for telling me what you look for. Help me do what you command! I Love You. Amen}
To the rest of you do not hold this teaching do not learn what some call the deep things of Satan I will not lay on you any other burden
{Do not follow false teaching. Do not try and learn about what Satan does, this can lead to confusion. He always makes sin seem reasonable. This is a battle that you may not win. The remedy is to learn to be with God and follow His directions. Thank you Jesus for your Word, help me keep looking to You not anything else!!}
Hold fast until I come
The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, I will give authority over the nations, even as I have myself received authority from my father
If you can hear, hear what the spirit says.
{Hold fast to the Almighty!! He is your safe place!! If I keep close to Him and conquer through Him I will be safe. Help me Hear Holy Spirit. Help me do what you say! Thank you Jesus for being willing to save me from this corruption in the world that is under the influence of evil. SAVE ME!}
