Matthew 26:24

The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him,

but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed!

It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.

My Jesus, may I never hear these words directed at me. Help me hear you, love you, want to obey you, and be brought home to you! My flesh is weak and I know I fall, help me to fall less and get up quicker. In your Holy Name I pray! Amen!

While knowledge of the truth is crucial, it doesn't automatically guarantee conversion. Conversion involves a deeper transformation that includes the will, emotions, and a turning away from sin towards God [^22] [^8].

Here's why knowledge alone is insufficient:

1.  **The Nature of Conversion:**
    *   Conversion is a gift from God, a work of the Trinity, initiated by the Holy Spirit, who opens hearts to believe in Christ [^12].
    *   It requires a complete and sincere adherence to Christ and His Gospel through faith [^6] [^12].
    *   Conversion involves accepting Christ's saving sovereignty and becoming His disciple through a personal decision [^6].
    *   It is a continuous, lifelong process of turning away from "life according to the flesh" to "life according to the Spirit" [^6].
    *   Conversion entails embracing a new vision proposed by the Gospel, leaving behind worldly ways of thinking and acting [^8] [^14].

2.  **The Role of Grace:**
    *   Faith, which is essential for conversion, is itself a gift from God that requires grace and the interior help of the Holy Spirit [^7] [^10].
    *   Grace moves the heart, turning it to God, opening the mind to accept the truth [^7] [^10].
    *   God's grace touches the heart, but humans can still reject that inspiration [^17] [^19].
    *   The first work of grace is conversion, which effects justification [^22]. Justification includes both the forgiveness of sins and the inner renewal of a person [^22] [^26].
    *   Sanctifying grace heals the soul from sin and makes us partakers of the divine nature and eternal life [^21] [^24] [^30].

3.  **The Necessity of Free Will:**
    *   Responding to God through faith must be free, and no one should be forced to embrace the faith against their will [^18].
    *   The act of faith is, by its very nature, a free act [^18].
    *   Humans can either receive or reject God's inspiration, turning to God or remaining in sin, as grace does not constrain free will [^25].

4.  **The Yearning for Truth:**
    *   Truth is a deep necessity of the human spirit, and a yearning for truth is what the Christian faith promotes [^4] [^9].
    *   Each person has to seek the truth and choose it when they find it, even if it requires sacrifices [^9].

5.  **The Obstacles to Conversion:**

    *   Sin, spiritual myopia, and self-infatuation can hinder a trusting self-abandonment to God and openness to others [^11].
    *   Skepticism and relativism can make hearts cold and closed, hindering the recognition of truth [^9].

In summary, while knowledge of the truth is a necessary component, conversion requires the action of grace, a free response of faith, and a turning away from sin [^3] [^15] [^23]. It's a transformation of the entire person, not just the intellect [^8] [^10].

The story of Lydia from today’s reading—where “the Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul”—reminds us that God does the work of opening hearts.

But the way He does this is mysteriously personal and gentle. He knocks, never forcing, always inviting.

Yes, God offers His grace to everyone: no one is left out of His loving initiative.

Yet our experience of His opening often doesn’t match our expectations or emotional hopes.

He opens how he wants and you respond but if you are expecting something different, you may not want his opening.

God takes care of us but we want it a certain way and blame for not getting our way instead of accepting the gift he gives.

Why Jesus, did you choose me? Why do you even care about me at all? I know; it is because you are sheer goodness and don’t want to live without me. You would rather be scourged and crowned with thorns and crucified than live without me. Father, teach me to know you, to love you, and to follow you. Holy Spirit, come, help me do your perfect will for me.

Repentance and conversion are closely related but not identical, and both are indeed considered gifts of grace [^2]. These gifts are not necessarily given to everyone at all times in the same measure [^7].

Repentance and conversion are closely related but not identical, and both are indeed considered gifts of grace [^2]. These gifts are not necessarily given to everyone at all times in the same measure [^7].

Here's a breakdown:

1.  **Conversion:**
    *   Conversion is a fundamental interior change, a reorientation of one's whole life, and a return to God with all one's heart [^5] [^8] [^9].
    *   It involves a new way of seeing oneself, others, and God [^9].
    *   Conversion requires leaving behind worldly ways of thinking and acting [^5].
    *   It is a continuous process of growth in the grace of Baptism, leading to a deeper participation in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ [^4].
    *   Conversion entails a transformation of conscience that results from God's grace [^3].
    *   It is a grace that transforms us [^2].

2.  **Repentance:**
    *   Repentance involves sorrow for and abhorrence of sins committed, along with a firm purpose to sin no more [^1].
    *   It includes compunction, penitence, and reparation [^6].
    *   Repentance is a grace, specifically the grace to recognize sin and the need for renewal and change [^2].
    *   It is a gift that enables us to acknowledge what is wrong in our lives, open ourselves to forgiveness, and prepare for transformation [^2].
    *   Repentance is the pain of purification and transformation and is a work of divine mercy [^2].

3.  **Relationship between Conversion and Repentance:**
    *   Conversion leads to an acceptance of the new vision proposed by the Gospel [^5].
    *   Repentance is integral to conversion, as it involves turning away from evil and toward God [^8].
    *   The call to conversion includes a summons to repent [^4].
    *   Repentance is not merely a private affair that is substituted by grace, but rather the advent of grace that transforms us [^2].
    *   Both John the Baptist and Jesus Christ began their ministries by calling people to repentance, emphasizing its importance in preparation for the Kingdom of God [^6] [^7].

4.  **Grace and Free Will:**
    *   Conversion and repentance are made possible by the victory of Jesus in his Paschal Mystery [^7].
    *   Every individual conversion expresses the divine plan, requiring human beings to consent to God's salvific action [^7].
    *   Conversion proclaims the supremacy of grace while also acknowledging the nobility and insufficiency of human effort [^7].
    *   The more one progresses in a relationship with God, the more acute the need to be converted from sin and self-infatuation [^10].

In summary, conversion is a comprehensive transformation of life, while repentance is a crucial component involving sorrow for sin and a desire to change. Both are considered gifts of grace, underscoring that they are initiated and sustained by God's divine assistance, not solely by human effort [^2] [^7].

Because our Soul is made to love truth, all can be saved. But the Will must be directed in the correct order.

Our thoughts must be on truth so our feelings follow truth not the broken ways of the world.

Correct way the Soul operates:

Thoughts change feelings,

Feelings change will,

Will chooses life direction.

Broken way the Soul operates:

Feelings change thoughts,

Thoughts change will

Will chooses life direction.
