**Understanding Divine Providence in Catholic Theology**

Divine Providence refers to the manner in which God preserves, provides for, rules, and governs the world, directing all things according to His infinite will. It encompasses the belief that God is actively involved in the unfolding of events in the universe, ensuring that everything ultimately aligns with His divine plan and purposes[^2][^4].

### The Nature of Divine Providence

1. **God's Sovereignty**: Divine Providence asserts that God is the sovereign master of His plan. He not only creates but also sustains and governs all things, guiding them toward their ultimate end[^4][^6]. This means that every event, whether perceived as good or evil, is under God's control and serves a purpose within His overarching plan[^1][^5].

2. **Cooperation with Creatures**: While God is the primary agent in Providence, He also allows for the cooperation of His creatures. This cooperation grants humans the dignity of acting freely, which means that their actions can contribute to the unfolding of God's plan[^4][^6]. Thus, while God directs all things, He respects human free will, allowing individuals to make choices that can align with or diverge from His intentions.

3. **The Role of Evil and Suffering**: The existence of evil and suffering is often a point of contention when discussing Providence. Catholic teaching holds that God does not cause evil; rather, He permits it, allowing for human free will to operate. Even in the face of sin and evil, God can bring about good and direct all things toward His ultimate purpose[^1][^3]. This perspective emphasizes that God's providential care encompasses even the most challenging circumstances, ultimately leading to a greater good[^8].

### Conclusion

In summary, Divine Providence indeed means that God is using all things that happen—whether they are perceived as positive or negative—for His own plan and purposes. This belief is rooted in the understanding that God is both the creator and sustainer of the universe, guiding all creation toward its intended fulfillment while allowing for human freedom and the complexities of existence[^2][^4][^6].

Father Creator

Son Redeemer

Spirit Sanctifier

God created me and has a specific plan for my life.

Jesus redeemed me from the curse of the Law of God (I cannot live the perfect life: He died for my sin and gave me his righteous life)

In Jesus I have the promise of the Holy Spirit through Faith (BELIEVE He is guiding me-Be led, don’t rebel)

Galatians 3:14-14

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE”— in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Jesus redeemed from the law

Been adopted

Given the Spirit

The Spirit inside helps me cry out ABBA FATHER

Galatians 5:5-6

so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons and daughters. Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba! Father!”

If you are looking to do the law to be right with God you are Severed from Christ and fallen from Grace.

Jesus already did everything (it is finished)

Through the Spirit, by Faith, in Christ we wait in Hope for our righteousness to come. (It will not be complete until the end)

Galatians 5:4-5

You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by the Law; you have fallen from grace. For we, through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness.

Your trouble is that you don't draw good from your trials.

Once, there was a dog people threw stones at, and in its fury, it bit the stones. Everyone laughed because the dog was breaking its teeth and solving nothing…

Look higher. Don't you know that the Lord arranges all things for the good of those who love Him? Don't you know that nothing comes to us or happens without our heavenly Father's permission?

Foolish one, do you want to be humble without humiliations, virtuous without virtues, a saint without labor? Foolish one, when will you learn to live crucified with Jesus?

All this happens to you because of your little virtue. And these fits of anger don't do any good for your soul or your body. Be sensible… all for Jesus. Be humble, and you'll have peace.

Saint Henry de Ossó y Cervelló

Help me hear you each morning

I trust you my God

Teach me the way to go today

I lift up my soul to you for guidance

Save me Lord!

I will hide in you!

Teach me to do your will and empower me.

You are my God, Holy Spirit lead me.

Because I am yours and called by your name revive me.

Save my soul in your righteousness.

~~

Psalm 143:8-11

Let me hear Your faithfulness in the morning,

For I trust in You;

Teach me the way in which I should walk;

For to You I lift up my soul.

Save me, LORD, from my enemies;

I take refuge in You.

Teach me to do Your will,

For You are my God;

Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

For the sake of Your name, LORD, revive me.

In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

Instead of being legalistic I have to surrender to grace in the Holy Spirit and let Christ live through me. He must increase I must decrease.

It’s not that I don’t follow his laws, it’s that he lives himself in me…it is him living his own laws in me.

It’s not a freedom to do evil. It is his grace to do the right things.

I live by faith that he is living his way out through me if I cooperate. If I fight  him, grace does not work.

~~~
I died to the law and live for God
I am crucified, I no longer live - Christ lives in me
I live by faith in the Son of God
Jesus loved me and gave himself for me
I live in grace not legalism
Righteousness did not come through the law in legalism but came through grace in faith.
~~~

Galatians 2:18-21

For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a wrongdoer. For through the Law I died to the Law, so that I might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

THE saints have always lived in peril of excommunication. Even canonized saints have been acquainted with the formal censures of ecclesiastical authority.

It’s Every Catholic’s Vocation To Be Mistreated in the Church

But every member of the Church down through the ages, from Peter the first pope all the way to you and me, is sinful – terribly sinful, even. So of course our Church, filled with sinners, is a place where people get hurt. It’s not right, and it’s not pretty, but it’s pretty consistent. Sometimes, the worst enemy of the Catholic Church is Catholics themselves, whether it be the person in the pew next to you, your priest or bishop, the Pope, or even yourself. When we sin, we hurt ourselves and those around us, and we impede the mission of the Church in the world – the salvation of souls.

St. Alphonsus did not simply suffer silently. He wrote: “At present the Church is not persecuted by idolaters, or by heretics, but she is persecuted by scandalous Christians, who are her own children.”

But he didn’t dwell on resentment and bitterness and left us great advice.

First: Focus on doing good. “The past is no longer yours; the future is not yet in your power. You have only the present wherein to do good,” he said.

Second: Focus on God’s presence everywhere, not the sins of his representatives: “When we see a beautiful object, a beautiful garden, or a beautiful flower, let us think that there we behold a ray of the infinite beauty of God, who has given existence to that object.”

Above all, pray. “Were you to ask what are the means of overcoming temptations, I would answer: The first means is prayer; the second is prayer; the third is prayer; and should you ask me a thousand times, I would repeat the same,” he said.

Some Catholic saints who were persecuted by their own church include:

• Saint Athanasius: Condemned by multiple councils and deposed from his position as Pope of Alexandria

• Saint Damasus: Faced opposition from his brethren, which led to the deaths of 137 electors

• Saint Epiphanius: Interrupted during a sermon and told to leave the pulpit

• Saint John of the Cross: Imprisoned by his religious superiors

  • St. Teresa of Avila (1515-1582) was persecuted near the end of her life. Her enemies were threatened by her success and opposed her efforts to reform the Carmelite order

• Saint Alphonsus Ligouri: Persecuted by Church leaders

• Joan of Arc: Burned at the stake with the approval of bishops

• St. Thomas Aquinas: His works were suppressed by the Church

  • Saint Benedict had hardly begun to work as Abbot of Vicovarro, when the monks tried to poison him.

  • Saint Chrysostom was excommunicated, and driven out of Constantinople.

• St. Lawrence
He was persecuted by the Roman emperor Valerian in 258

  • Saint Damasus was so energetically opposed by his brethren that, upon the adjournment of the meeting at which he was elected Pope of Rome, a hundred and thirty-seven bodies of dead electors were found on the church floor.

Sometimes we think that the Bible came right from Christ’s lips. That’s a mistake. Christ established his Church, the living community of his followers gathered around and “built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 2:20). He commissioned that Church to hand on (the same term that gives the etymological root for “tradition”) his message. The Bible followed, as disciples like St Luke realized a need to record the events and teachings of Christ’s life and the early Church for the sake of having common reference points to guide the Church’s growth. The Bible truly is the Word of God, a uniquely inspired compendium of God’s own self-revelation, but it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It is a sacred text whose full meaning only shines through when read and interpreted in the context of the living Church, which preserves the Tradition from which the Bible itself sprang.

That’s why the term “Bible Christian” is a misnomer – the Bible is not enough to make for a mature Christian. And that’s why all Christians need to make the effort to stay tuned to what the Church is saying; we all need to feed our souls on God’s Word as served up by the Church.

ONE TRINITARIAN GOD

God the Father: Creator

God the Son: Redeemer

God the Holy Spirit: Sanctifier

The unpardonable sin: blasphemy (an act or offense) against the Holy Spirit.

God the Father made you, he had the rightful authority over you as his creation.

God the Son payed your ransom from death and sin.

God the Holy Spirit convicts you of your sin and gives you power to live righteous.

If you refuse the Holy Spirit there is no other way of salvation. (You could possibly not understand the Father, or even the Son, but refusing the Spirit ends in hell)
