Take up the cross.
As long as we are on earth,
suffering will never be wanting;
it will be found even
in the highest states of divine union,
for we must always be conformed
to Jesus crucified,
and follow him even
to complete immolation
for the glory of the Father
and the salvation of our brethren.
Forgetting ourself completely,
the loving soul thinks neither
of enjoying nor of suffering,
but only of loving and serving God,
of contributing as much as it can
to his glory by associating itself
to the redemptive work of Jesus.
