Just as grace is a free gift, so also is faith: it is God who calls us to faith and who infuses faith. “For by grace you have been saved through faith”—states the Apostle—“and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Eph 2:8).
“If this faith is to be shown, the grace of God and the interior help of the Holy Spirit must precede and assist, moving the heart and turning it to God, opening the eyes of the mind, and giving ‘joy and ease to everyone in assenting to the truth and believing it’
To be a believer is a pure gift of God, not due to any personal merit. God is both the object of faith and the giver of faith; it is he who infuses into us the desire to know him and to believe in him and who makes us capable of the act of believing.
‘The obedience of faith’ must be given to God who reveals, an obedience by which man entrusts his whole self freely to God, offering ‘the full submission of intellect and will to God’
Thus faith becomes an act of surrender to God.
