However much we watch over ourselves and sincerely search into self we are incapable of discovering every crease and shadow of our heart; we need a greater light which only God can give.

This is why our examination of conscience must not be reduced to a cold introspection, but must rather consist in putting ourselves face to face with God to look at ourselves in him, to see ourselves in the light of his truth and infinite goodness, of his eternal love, of his grace and of his countless gifts.

Then even the slightest flaws stand out in clearer light, and we feel more strongly urged to repentance and conversion, and at the same time are led to trust more in God than in self.

O most wise Creator, who formed me in the beginning in your image and likeness? By my own will I have become an accomplice of the devil and a slave to sin. Deliver, me, Lord, in your mercy, have pity on me!. . .
