The Lessons of the Letter to Philemon
God could order us to do right
But instead he appeals to us in love
He does not want to do anything without our consent
When we consent our goodness is merit not compulsion
We have free will
Jesus also intercedes for us so God will lay what we owe on Christ so we can be reconciled.
Philemon 1:8-9a
Therefore, though I have enough confidence in Christ to order you to do what is proper, yet for love’s sake I rather appeal to you.
Philemon 1:14
but I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness would not be, in effect, by compulsion, but of your own free will.
Philemon 1:18
But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account;
