7 For there are three that bear witness:

8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement (1 John 5:7–8, LSB)

Spirit for ongoing life—uniting us to the Trinity

Spirit: Holy Spirit opens our eyes with grace.

The Spirit is the "Spirit of truth" who enlightens, regenerates, and abides forever in believers, making them children of light. He testifies to Christ, pours out grace for rebirth, and enables us to perceive spiritual realities, where He renews us inwardly.

water for Baptism and the Bible (initiation and enlightenment)

Water: Traditionally, this signifies Baptism, the "washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit". The "word" is Christ's proclaimed truth in the rite, not Bible study alone, though Scripture nourishes faith. Paul describes Christ sanctifying the Church "by the washing of water with the word," The Word of God washes us by renewing our minds. The Holy Spirit is the author of the Bible.

blood for Eucharist (nourishment and atonement)

Blood: The blood of Christ cleanses us from sin so we can be in His presence.

the Eucharist, where Christ's sacrifice redeems, forgives venial sins, and preserves from mortal sin
