44 “Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. (Luke 9:44–45, RSV2CE)
REFLECTION
Catholic interpretation, God is not "double-talking"; rather, the disciples' understanding was temporarily blocked by their own human expectations of an earthly, political king, and the full meaning of the Cross could only be grasped after the Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Why Jesus Told Them to Listen
• An Anchor for the Future: When Jesus says "let these words sink into your ears" He is giving them a solemn command to memorize and hold onto His words.
• A Future Proof of Faith: He knew they could not process it yet. However, when the Crucifixion actually happened, they would remember that He predicted it. This memory would prevent them from falling into total despair and help them see that His death was part of God’s plan.
Why It Was "Hidden" from Them
• Preconceived Notions: The disciples expected the Messiah to overthrow the Roman Empire and set up a powerful military kingdom. The idea of a suffering, dying Messiah completely clashed with their dreams of glory. (In fact, right after this, they start arguing about which of them is the greatest).
• Spiritual Limitations: The phrase "it was hidden from them" does not mean God tricked them or played a cruel game. In biblical language, it describes a spiritual veil caused by human weakness and pride. They were not yet spiritually ready to look upon the mystery of redemptive suffering.
RESOLUTION
God, help me. Open my blocks so I don’t come with preconceived erroneous ideas. I do not want to miss the real you. So many people have ideas of who you are and what you want. I do not want my pride or my following of errors make me miss YOU. Please give me grace to be open. Most importantly help me understand that all things are in your plan and just because I cant understand does not mean I should fall away or into despair.
