Perfect contrition
arises from a love of God
and a sincere desire to be reconciled with Him
can obtain forgiveness for mortal sins even without the sacrament, provided there is a firm resolution to confess when possible.
Perfect contrition can attain Heaven, This is because perfect contrition is rooted in love for God, which is a more profound motivation for repentance.
Imperfect Contrition, (attrition)
is motivated by a fear of punishment, hell, or the ugliness of sin
Imperfect contrition can lead to forgiveness of sins, but it does not suffice on its own for the forgiveness of grave sins without the Sacrament of Penance.
While imperfect contrition disposes a person to receive grace in the sacrament, it cannot, by itself, restore a person to a state of grace.
However, if a person possesses imperfect contrition and has the intention to confess as soon as possible, this can lead to forgiveness of mortal sins through the sacrament.
While imperfect contrition can lead to a disposition towards grace and forgiveness, it is not sufficient for salvationwithout the sacrament of Penance. The Church emphasizes the necessity of sacramental confession for the forgiveness of serious sins. Therefore, while imperfect contrition may be a step towards repentance, it is the combination of contrition (preferably perfect) and the sacrament that ultimately leads to reconciliation with God and the possibility of attaining Heaven
