The ancient sacrifices were not capable of expiating the sins of men nor of rendering to God worship that was worthy of him. Then the Son offers himself: he takes to himself the body which the Father has made ready for him and in that body he is born and lives in time as a victim who is offered in an uninterrupted sacrifice, which is to be consummated on the cross.
It is the only sacrifice which is able to satisfy God, which is capable of redeeming men, and which does away with all other sacrifices. “Behold, I come”: obedience to the will of the Father is the underlying motive of the whole life of Christ, from Bethlehem to Golgotha to the Resurrection.
