(Ezek 33:7-9). God had made Ezekiel the watchman of his people and told him: “If you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand”.

Those who have duties like those of the prophet have a heavy responsibility: shepherds of the people of God, religious superiors, fathers and mothers of families, teachers. Their salvation is linked to their zeal in caring for their flock, be it large or small.

To permit a son or brother to perish in sin without extending a helping hand is a betrayal, an act of cowardice and selfishness, for which God will demand a strict account.

The fear of being rejected, of losing popularity, or of being accused of intransigence, does not justify “washing our hands of the matter” or “letting things slide.”
