READ
35 As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; 36 and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. 37 They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38 And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 39 And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 40 And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, he asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.” 42 And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” 43 And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God. (Luke 18:35–43, RSV2CE)
REFLECT
I can’t see but hear a commotion. I ask what is happening. The crowd tells me Jesus is passing by me.
I must have heard who he is already because I need no explanation on who he is. I immediately cry out for mercy. I must know that he is merciful for me to cry out for it from him. People rebuke me for crying out but I don’t care I keep crying out even more! Jesus, Son of David, Have mercy on me! I have heard the stories and believed. I know he is the messiah because I call him the Son of David.
Jesus stops. Jesus commands that I be brought to him.
I am brought to Jesus. He asks me what I want him to do for me. I call him Lord, I tell him I want to receive sight from him. I know I am a receiver. I know he is the giver. I request to receive. I trust he can do as he pleases, he has authority and power.
Jesus tells me that I can receive what I have requested because I have had faith in who he is and what he can do. I immediately follow and glorify God!
RESOLUTION
I will not listen to the world telling me to shut up. I will cry out for mercy to the one who is merciful and loves to give gifts to heal sinners. I know I am a sinner and I know I need to receive from the merciful one. I believe you are who you say you are and I believe you have power and authority. Please deliver and heal! All glory to you my God!
REST
Thank you for loving us sinners and not leaving us. Thank you for wanting to bless and heal us. Thank you Jesus for coming and passing us by!
