Repentance is not sadness that life has consequences.
Repentance is horror that you have offended the only pure perfect true love who has done everything to be with you and love you forever.
This is the classic theological distinction between attrition (sorrow born out of fear of punishment or consequences) and contrition (sorrow born out of love for the one who has been hurt).
The focus should be from "What is going to happen to me?" to "How could I hurt the One who loves me?"
