30 They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he would not have any one know it; 31 for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” 32 But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to ask him. (Mark 9:30–32, RSV2CE)
REFLECT
Jesus is teaching his disciples and does not want anyone else to know. This is for them only. Jesus was explaining the plan to them. They were told exactly: that he was going to be given up, killed, and after three days rise from the dead.
They could not understand because they envisioned something completely different for him. We see God in our own eyes instead of letting him tell us who he is. He tells us but we reject that idea… that’s not how my God acts, or does things, or believes. (Ex: God loves us, He won’t send anyone to hell.) The truth is God tells us exactly how to get to heaven, but we refuse to believe that is the only way. We have in our mind what we want it to be and reject truth.
The disciples envisioned Jesus as a conquering king, not a suffering servant, and therefore could not understand his revelation of exactly what was going to happen. They were surprised and shocked when it did. They were afraid to ask him because maybe they didn’t want to know the truth.
RESOLUTION
My God, it is true I have an idea of who you are. I don’t want my idea, I want You and Your truth. Only Truth can set me free from the domain of darkness. I know that accepting truth can be painful to my flesh that is broken and wants harmful things. Only you are able to satisfy my longing heart for love. Only you can give me strength to be a new creation of grace. Only you can make me reach the fulfillment I was created for. You made me for you. You made me for love. You have a purpose for me that only I can live. Help me listen to you. Help me understand you. Help me accept you. Help me surrender and obey you. I want to be what you made me for and glorify your holy name!
REST
You said that anyone who believes you will be saved. I believe you came for me. I believe your blood cleanses away my sin away. I believe your propitiation paid to redeem me. I believe you have a purpose for me. I believe you love me and want me with you forever. I believe your Holy Spirit will help me pray, understand, see, and obey. I believe you will finish what you started! I will rest and trust in YOU! Amen.
