Luke 4:33-35
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, “Leave us alone! What business do You have with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, it came out of him without doing him any harm.
Why is a man possessed with a demon in the synagogue?
How would the demon tolerate being in the synagogue?
Demons, also referred to as devils, are fallen angels who freely refused to serve God and His plan 3, 4. While they reject the divine disposition, God can still use them for the fulfillment of His will 5. The presence of a demon in the synagogue does not imply tolerance or acceptance of God's presence, but rather a confrontation with divine authority. When Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to be silent and come out of the man, the demon cried out, recognizing Jesus as "the Holy One of God" 1. This reaction indicates distress and a forced submission to Jesus' power, not a comfortable presence
Why would the man want to be there if he has let evil in so much it dominated him?
The man's presence in the synagogue was likely not a conscious choice driven by his own will, but rather a manifestation of the demon's influence. Demonic possession can involve the evil spirit controlling and directing the individual's physical powers 2. The demon's outburst and subsequent expulsion by Jesus demonstrate that the man was under the demon's control. The demon was there to defy God.
How is it that demons know who Jesus is but man does not?
Demons, as fallen angels, possess a knowledge that surpasses human understanding. Their prior existence and their spiritual nature grant them a recognition of divine beings that humans, in their earthly state, may not immediately possess. This knowledge is not born of faith or worship, but of their inherent spiritual understanding and their opposition to God's plan.
If they don’t mind being in the church how many are in them today?
is not quantifiable
And even if man is delivered they can come back with seven more and it’s worse.
filling the void left by the expulsion of evil with good, through prayer, discipline, and adherence to God's will 12. The success of exorcism by Christians, in Christ's name, is conditional and subject to the same general conditions on which the efficacy of prayer and the use of charismatic power depend 9. It highlights the need for ongoing spiritual vigilance and commitment to Christ to prevent a relapse into a worse state of spiritual servitude.
