The Catholic Church distinguishes between the worship given to God alone (adoration or latria) and the veneration given to Mary and the saints (dulia), with Mary receiving a unique form of veneration called hyperdulia due to her singular role as the Mother of God 3 4 6. While you can speak to Mary, the nature of this communication differs from how you speak to Jesus.

Speaking to Mary

You can certainly speak to Mary in prayer, much like a child speaks to their mother 4. This practice is deeply rooted in Catholic tradition, with the "Hail Mary" being a common prayer since the 14th century 1. The Church encourages a personal and communal devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary through approved pious exercises 8.

When you speak to Mary, you are entrusting your supplications and praises to her, recognizing her unique cooperation with the Holy Spirit and her knowledge of humanity 10. The first known Marian invocation, dating back to the third century, begins with "We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God," indicating a long-standing tradition of seeking her protection and intercession 1 2.

Mary's Intercession

Mary, as the Mother of the Church and Mother of humanity, intercedes for the Christian people 7. Her intercession is a powerful service to God's plan 15. The honor paid to Mary is ordered and leads to the adoration of the Blessed Trinity, meaning that venerating Mary ultimately fosters a deeper relationship with God 5. Her role is to bring us to Christ, as exemplified by her instruction at the wedding feast of Cana: "Do whatever he tells you" (Jn 2:5) 3 5.

The saints, including Mary, offer their prayers to God for humanity 14). When Catholics pray to Mary or the saints, they are not praying to them as if they were the source of grace, but rather asking them to intercede with God on their behalf 14) 15. This is similar to how one might ask a friend to pray for them 14).

How Mary Might "Answer" You

Mary does not "answer" in the same way that God directly reveals Himself or speaks to individuals. Instead, her "answers" or responses are typically experienced through:

  • Inner Peace and Consolation: Many faithful report experiencing a sense of peace, comfort, or spiritual consolation after praying to Mary, which can be interpreted as a maternal response to their prayers 8.
  • Guidance and Inspiration: Through her intercession, Mary can help guide you towards Christ and inspire you to follow His commandments 5. This guidance might come through a clearer understanding of Church teaching, a renewed commitment to prayer, or a deeper desire to live a virtuous life.
  • Answered Prayers: While all graces come from God, Mary's intercession can be instrumental in the granting of prayers. The faithful confidently have recourse to her patronage, believing that she, being full of mercy, intercedes for them 8.
  • Spiritual Growth: Devotion to Mary is meant to foster faithful adherence to Christ and affirm His divinity 5. As you grow in devotion to Mary, you may find yourself growing closer to Jesus and experiencing a more profound spiritual life.

It is important to remember that Mary's mediating role is secondary and dependent upon Christ, who is the one mediator between God and humanity 3. All the salvific influence she bestows flows from the superabundance of Christ's merits and depends entirely on His mediation 3.

Prayer to God

Prayer, in its most fundamental sense, is the raising of one's mind and heart to God, to adore Him, thank Him, ask for forgiveness, and beg for necessary graces 11 12 13 16 19. It is a personal and living relationship with God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit 19. When you pray to Jesus, you are engaging in direct adoration and communion with the Incarnate Word 4.

In summary, while you can speak to Mary with filial devotion and ask for her intercession, this is distinct from the adoration and direct communion you have with Jesus, who is God. Mary's role is to lead you closer to her Son 3.
