Suffering and how to find meaning

Suffering and how to find meaning

The Completeness of Christ's Sacrifice

• Redemption Accomplished: Jesus' suffering and death on the Cross fully accomplished our redemption 1 3. There is nothing lacking in His sacrifice to pay the debt for sin 1 3.

Grace and Mediation

• God's Grace: Grace is a free and undeserved gift from God 4. It is the source of all salvation and holiness 4.

• Jesus as Mediator: Jesus Christ is the one and only mediator between God and humanity 3. He is the source of all grace 3.

• No Earning Grace: We cannot earn grace through our own efforts or suffering 4. Salvation is a gift from God, not something we can achieve on our own 4.

The Meaning of Suffering in Union with Christ

• Sharing in Christ's Suffering: Christians are called to share in Christ's suffering 1 2. This doesn't mean that Christ's sacrifice was insufficient, but rather that we are invited to participate in His redemptive work 1 2 3.

• Transformation from Within: Christ transforms suffering not by removing it from the outside, but by being present within it through His Spirit 5.

• Love for the Father: In union with Christ, suffering can become an act of love for God, surrendering to His divine providence

Bearing Witness: Those who suffer in union with Christ bear witness to the hope and joy of the Resurrection 9. They reveal God's love and show the true dignity of the human person

God allows us to participate in His saving work 1 2 3.

How Suffering Can Serve Others

• Cooperation with Grace: While we cannot give grace to others, we can cooperate with God's grace in their lives 12. Our prayers, sacrifices, and sufferings, when offered in union with Christ, can be a means by which God's grace reaches others 1 2.

• Example and Witness: Our patient endurance of suffering can be a powerful example to others, inspiring them to turn to God and seek His grace 2. Our suffering can also be a witness to the love of Christ, showing others that God is with them in their pain 2.

• Intercession: By offering our sufferings in union with Christ, we can intercede for others 3. We can ask God to have mercy on them, to grant them the grace of conversion, and to help them in their needs 3.

How Suffering Enriches the Church

• Spiritual Strength: The suffering of its members can be a source of spiritual strength for the Church 1. Those who suffer often develop a deeper reliance on God and a greater compassion for others 1.

• Purification: Suffering can purify us from our sins and attachments, making us more open to God's grace 6. This purification benefits the whole Church, as we become more effective instruments of God's love 6.

• Solidarity: When we suffer with others, we show solidarity with them and strengthen the bonds of community 1. This is especially important in the Church, where we are all members of one body 1.

Supporting the Powers of Good

• Spiritual Warfare: The Church teaches that we are engaged in a spiritual battle against the forces of evil 5. Our sufferings, when united with Christ, can be a powerful weapon in this battle 5.

• Love and Sacrifice: By choosing to love and forgive, even in the midst of suffering, we resist the temptation to bitterness and despair 6. This is a victory for good, and it weakens the power of evil in the world 6.

• Trust in God: By trusting in God's love and providence, even when we do not understand why we are suffering, we give witness to the power of faith 2. This can inspire others to trust in God as well 2.

God's Will and Suffering

• Not Wishing Suffering: God does not wish suffering on anyone 2. Suffering is a consequence of sin and a part of the human condition 2.

• Permitting Suffering: God permits suffering for reasons we do not always understand 2. However, He always offers us the grace to bear our suffering with faith and hope 2.

• Transforming Suffering: God can transform our suffering into something good 7. He can use it to draw us closer to Himself, to teach us valuable lessons, and to make us more compassionate people 7.

Building Up the Body of Christ

• Union with Christ: When we unite our sufferings with Christ, we become more fully members of His body, the Church 1. We share in His mission of salvation and contribute to the building up of His kingdom 1.

• Love and Service: By loving and serving others, even in the midst of our own suffering, we build up the body of Christ 1. We show the world the love of God and invite others to join us in His service 1.

• Spiritual Growth: Our sufferings can help us to grow in virtue and holiness, making us more effective members of the Church 4. This spiritual growth benefits the whole body of Christ 4.

In conclusion, while grace comes from God alone, our suffering, when united with Christ, can be a means by which we cooperate with God's grace, serve others, enrich the Church, support the powers of good, and build up the body of Christ 12 3. It is not that our suffering earns grace or adds to Christ's sacrifice, but rather that God allows us to participate in His saving work in a mysterious and powerful way 1 2 3.
