God’s Love is unconditional and His Presence is Conditional
Yes. The Church teaches that God’s love for every person is unconditional, but the full communion with Him that constitutes the beatific vision is attained only when we cooperate with the grace He freely offers.
- Unconditional love – “God is love; He gave Himself completely and gratuitously” (CCC 4). This love is the basis of all mercy (Lumen Fidei 19).
- Conditions for sharing in His holy presence – The ordinary means of salvation are faith, Baptism, repentance (the Sacrament of Penance) and communion in the Eucharist(CCC 846‑848). These are the channels by which God’s grace purifies us (CCC 1257).
- Why the conditions matter – Sin creates a real separation from God’s sanctifying presence (Dominum et vivificantem 38). Baptism removes original sin; penance restores us from mortal sin; the Eucharist makes us one with Christ. Only after this purification can we “enter the tabernacle of the Lord” (Psalm 15) and share in the divine life.
Therefore, God’s love is the foundation of the mercy that makes salvation possible, but the actual entry into heaven requires the free cooperation of the human person with the grace received through the sacraments and a life of faith. The devil’s “presence” before God in Job (Job 1‑2) shows that God’s providence extends to all created beings, yet only those who are purified and united with Him can enjoy the holy, beatific presence of the Trinity.
