John 5:42-44
But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God?
REFLECT
Jesus sees that people do not really love God. If they loved God they would be seeking truth and be watching for what He told them to watch for, the Messiah. They would be worshipping God not themselves and their laws.
Jesus came in the Fathers name. They did not recognize or receive Him. Other men they would receive when they came testifying things about themselves. But God’s Son they did not recognize or receive because they were not close to or loving God which they say was their whole life.
If they truly loved God, they would have had eyes to see. If they were seeking the Honor Love and Glory of God and not themselves they would have been able to receive. They instead were seeking honor for themselves and the kingdom they built by their laws instead of love for God.
We can get so wrapped up in our “doing” we forget to be “being”. God wants our hearts. He wants love of Him not performance.
PRAY
Father, this is where I fall a lot. I love you so much I want to perform perfectly. And when I am stuck in that frame of mind I get worse instead of better. Please help me see when I start to become more about the rules instead of more about the heart. You want to deliver my heart first so that my actions follow. Behavior modification does not change hearts. I may look like a Christian but a real Christian is one in heart before the deeds come through. Even if I fall in deeds many times a day, the heart will be grieved and get cleansed. But if I didn’t fall at all and my heart was far from you I am dead. Help me Jesus!! Fill me with your perfect love so I can love you with it. Amen.
