The Story

Complaints and Punishment:

The Israelites became impatient and complained to God and Moses about their journey, the food, and the lack of water. As a punishment, God sent fiery, poisonous snakes among them.

Bites and Death:

Many Israelites were bitten and died from the snake bites.

Confession and Intercession:

The people confessed their sin and pleaded with Moses to pray to the Lord to remove the snakes.

God's Instruction:

God instructed Moses to fashion a bronze serpent and place it on a pole. He promised that anyone who looked at the bronze serpent would be healed.

Healing:

Moses made the bronze serpent, and anyone who was bitten and looked at it would live

Spiritual Significance

The act of looking at the bronze serpent was an act of faith and repentance, signifying agreement with God's judgment and a hopeful trust in His promise of deliverance.

Jesus himself referenced the incident, saying, "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:14-15).

It’s that simple and I don’t know why so many complicate the matter:

Instead of accepting everything I have as a gift from God, I complain and try to get what I want my way.

The punishment is that sin darkens my intellect and will and I go deeper into idolatry and sin.

I am a sinner

I am dying in my sin

I confess my sin and ask Jesus to remove the sin

God has lifted Jesus up on the cross to die for sins promising any that look to Jesus will be healed

All I have to do is lift my eyes and believe.

When I look to Jesus it is an act of faith and repentance, signifying the agreement with God's judgment of my sin and a hopeful trust in His promise of deliverance from sin and the promise of eternal life.

When I repent in faith I am filled with the Holy Spirit who will guide me to fight against the flesh until I get home. The Blood of Christ covers me and washes me. I can have fellowship with God my Father who is the redeemer and lover of my soul.
