Jesus is revealing, making visible, God’s immeasurable love for each one of us. He loves us so much that he is willing to suffer in our place, even while we were still sinners (as St Paul later points out).
It’s like sitting in the electric chair in place of the man who murdered your children so that he doesn’t have to suffer and die – crazy love, incalculable love, unfathomable love. And that is God’s glory: making known God’s love, the love that gives existence to the universe, the love that calls us into being and reaches out to bring us into the eternal Kingdom.
But God’s love is not enough, each person has the choice to respond. Only those who repent and want to follow, will be saved. Anyone who rejects God’s love will be destroying their own soul.
