Matthew 17:20
And He *said to them, “Because of your little faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
Incomplete Trust: Despite believing in Jesus, the apostles did not fully grasp the extent of His power or their own potential through Him 1. Their faith was not yet strong enough to overcome the specific challenge of casting out the demon.
Doubt and Fear: The presence of doubt and fear hindered their ability to act with the full confidence that Jesus encouraged 1. This lack of trust limited their capacity to perform the miracle.
Faith and Works: Faith requires action and should be demonstrated through love and service 1. The apostles' inability to cast out the demon suggested a disconnect between their belief and their capacity to act on that belief.
In essence, the apostles' "little faith" in Matthew 17:20 wasn't a complete absence of belief, but rather a deficiency in the depth and strength of their trust, which prevented them from fully accessing the power available to them through Jesus.
Faith continually grows through listening to the Word of God and through prayer.
