Who are the elect? Am I one?

The term "the elect" has roots in both the Old and New Testaments and refers to those chosen by God for a specific purpose or for salvation [^1]. Here's a breakdown of its meaning:

#### Old Testament

In the Old Testament, "the elect" refers to the Israelites, specifically those called to be God's people and those faithful to that calling [^1]. They are the recipients of God's temporal and spiritual blessings [^1]. The "chosen ones" can also refer to repentant Israelites or God's true servants within the chosen people [^1].

#### New Testament

In the New Testament, the term shifts from referring to the people of Israel to the members of the Church of Christ, both those living on earth (the Church Militant) and those in heaven (the Church Triumphant) [^1]. The elect are described as a chosen generation, a holy nation, called out of darkness into God's light [^1].

#### Key Aspects of the Elect

*   **Chosen by God:** The elect are freely chosen by God [^1]. This choice is an act of love, predestining them to be sons and daughters through Jesus Christ [^5] [^8] [^9].
*   **Predestination:** St. Paul describes the elect as foreknown, predestined, called, justified, and glorified [^1]. According to Augustine, this election occurs before the foundation of the world, not because God foresees that they will believe and be holy, but so that they may become holy through grace [^2].
*   **Calling:** The elect are called by God, not because they have already believed, but in order that they may believe [^3]. As Jesus said, "You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you" [^3].
*   **Grace:** Election is an act of grace, not based on prior merits or good works [^6]. Grace precedes and enables faith and good works [^6].
*   **Perseverance:** Those who are elect cannot perish, because God's choice is infallible and His power is insurmountable [^4].
*   **Universal Vocation:** The eternal choice in Christ and the vocation to holiness applies to each and every person [^8] [^9].

The concept of the elect also appears in the context of the end times, where God will shorten the last days for the sake of the elect [^1]. Revelation speaks of the elect fighting on the side of the Lamb against the powers of darkness [^1].

The question of whether one can know with certainty if they are among the elect has been a point of theological discussion. Catholic teaching addresses this issue with nuance, particularly in response to certain Protestant views.

#### Assurance of Salvation

Catholic theology acknowledges the difficulty in knowing with absolute certainty one's own predestination or final salvation [^6]. The Council of Trent condemned the idea that individuals can or should believe with certainty that they are among the elect [^6].

#### Signs of Hope

While absolute certainty is not possible, there are signs that can give hope and a sense of assurance:

*   **Love and Good Works:** While not a cause of salvation, a life of love, faith, and good works is an indication of God's grace at work in a person [^6].
*   **Faith and Perseverance:** Holding fast to the faith and persevering in good works until the end of life are signs of being in a state of grace [^6].
*   **Trust in God's Mercy:** Catholics are encouraged to trust in God's mercy and to live a life of faith, hope, and charity [^2].

#### Avoiding Presumption and Despair

Catholic teaching navigates a middle ground between the extremes of presumption and despair:

*   **Presumption:** It is dangerous to presume that one is saved regardless of one's actions or lack of faith [^6].
*   **Despair:** It is equally dangerous to fall into despair, believing that salvation is impossible or that one is predestined to damnation [^6].

#### Seeking God's Will

Ultimately, the focus should be on seeking God's will, living a life of faith and charity, and trusting in His mercy [^1] [^2]. As Pope Francis has emphasized, God's love and salvation are offered to all, and He desires that all be saved [^7] [^8] [^9].
