The Catholic Church teaches that certain doctrines and morals are necessary for salvation. These can be summarized as follows:

Core Doctrines

  • Belief in God and the Trinity: It is essential to believe in one God and the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)  .
  • Jesus Christ's Redemption: A core belief is that Jesus Christ, the Second Person of the Trinity, became man and died for our redemption . The saving love of God is made manifest in Jesus Christ who died and rose from the dead .
  • Necessity of God's Grace: Understanding that the grace of God is necessary for salvation is crucial . No human being can ultimately save themselves; salvation comes only from God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit .
  • Immortality of the Soul: The belief that the human soul is immortal is also a fundamental religious truth .

Moral Principles

  • Following God's Law: The Catechism of the Council of Trent emphasizes that the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) describes all that relates to the law, whose end is charity .
  • Love and Charity: The ultimate goal of Christian life, as reflected in the Decalogue, is love and charity .

Means of Salvation

  • Sacraments: The Church believes that the sacraments are entirely the gift of Christ to the Church . They are instruments of grace , and God's salvation is made present through them, especially the seven sacraments .
  • Adherence to Church Teachings: Believing firmly and faithfully in all that God has revealed, as contained in sacred scripture and tradition, is necessary. This revelation finds expression in the ordinances and definitions of the popes and legitimate Ecumenical Councils .
  • Living a Life of Faith: Salvation is accomplished through Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit, made present in the sacred actions of the Church's liturgy . The essential goal of the Church is to transmit the goods of salvation—the Gospel and sacraments—to every generation .

Hierarchy of Truths

  • Interconnectedness of Doctrines: While all revealed truths derive from the same divine source, some are more important for giving direct expression to the heart of the Gospel . There exists an order or hierarchy of truths in Catholic doctrine, as they vary in their relation to the foundation of the Christian faith  . This hierarchy does not mean some truths pertain to faith less than others, but that some truths are based on others as of a higher priority and are illumined by them .

In summary, the doctrines and morals necessary for salvation in the Catholic Church encompass faith in the Holy Trinity, the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the necessity of God's grace, the immortality of the soul, adherence to God's law through love and charity, participation in the sacraments, and faithful acceptance of the Church's teachings    . These elements, intertwined with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, contribute effectively to the salvation of souls .
